The Sarton Medal has been awarded annually since 1955 for lifetime scholarly achievement in the field of history of science. It is named after George Sarton, the founder of the journal Isis.

Besides outlining the remarkable range of Simon Schaffer's publications and his contributions to public awareness of the history of science, the award citation notes that he is 'a dedicated and inspirational teacher, a cherished collaborator, a supportive advisor to droves of (undergraduate and graduate) students and colleagues alike, and a loyal friend.'
