Professor Derek Thomas (Tom) Whiteside, FBA, a long-standing member of the Department of History and Philosophy of Science, from the early 1960s on, died on 22 April 2008.

Tom was widely honoured as the foremost historian of mathematics of his generation; he will always be remembered and revered for his Mathematical Papers of Isaac Newton (1967–1981) and as the leading scholar of seventeenth-century mathematics and the mathematical sciences. He was Reader in the History of Mathematics (1976) and then Professor of the History of Mathematics and Exact Sciences (1987) in the University of Cambridge. He received the Koyré medal of the International Academy of the History of Science in 1968, the Sarton medal of the History of Science Society in 1977 and was elected FBA in 1975.
