Out of Print Publications

The Museum has a wide range of publications giving in-depth information on areas of the collection. The titles listed below are unfortunately no longer available.

The Physics of Empire: Public Lectures
Richard Staley (ed.), 1994, 142pp

This volume uses a series of specially written essays to explore the work which physicists and technicians performed in their own laboratories, and the connection between these laboratories and the great exhibitions of later 19th-century science.

Instruments of Attraction
Patricia Fara, 1996, 30pp

A booklet to accompany the 'Case Study' prepared by Dr Patricia Fara. It is concerned with Enlightenment England where magnetic phenomena reverberated with a concealed symbolism of occult mystery, sexual attraction and universal sympathies. Selected instruments from the Whipple Museum's collection are used to illustrate how descriptions of the natural world and human emotions shared a common imagery, which has influenced how we think today.
