Forthcoming Events

Below are details of forthcoming events being held at the Whipple Museum.

Except where stated, all events are free of charge and open to all.

Twilight at the Museums

Wednesday 15th February 4:30PM - 7:30PM

Chart your voyage through the museum, taking in its hidden treasures, while discovering the secrets of scientific exploration. The Whipple museum holds countless objects used by travellers, from the sextants that measure latitude to the artificial horizons that guided sailors through the dark. Explore these objects and more by completing our torch-lit trail. Continue your travels through the activities brought to the Whipple by the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology and discover more about explorers of the past and the people they met.

The rules of form: sonnets and slide rules

Wednesday 14 March 6:00PM - 7:00PM

Drawing inspiration from the Whipple Museum's Hutchinson collection of mathematical instruments, Writer-in-Residence Kelley Swain and guest speakers will discuss constraints of creative form in literature and poetry, from Oulipo to Rondeaux to turning women into furniture.

This event is free but please book by emailing hps-whipple-museum@lists.cam.ac.uk

The objects of science: Saturday opening

Saturday 17 March 10:00AM - 4:00PM

Explore the Whipple Museum's collections and investigate how some of our objects work using the handling trolleys.

Space, time and philosophy

Tuesday 20 March, 2:00pm - 3:00pm

The ideas of space and time are pretty obvious in our everyday life, but once we start asking questions about the nature of space and time, we find ourselves facing difficulties and realise we don't have obvious answers.

This event is free but please book by emailing hps-whipple-museum@lists.cam.ac.uk

Music at the Whipple

Friday 23 March 6:00PM - 7:00PM

Come to the Whipple Museum to enjoy a Theramin concert performed by Charlie Draper. Charlie is one of the UK's few classically-trained thereminists. Having taught himself to play the instrument, he continued his studies under Lydia Kavina, the last protege and grand-niece of the instrument's inventor, Leon Theremin. He has performed as soloist with the Radio Science Orchestra (most recently at the British Library's 'Out of this World' exhibition), in concert with Anglia Ruskin's Symphonic Orchestra (performing Messiaen's 'Turangalila-Symphonie'), and he was invited to play at the 2008 Welsh Proms. Charlie is currently recording a solo album for Gramophone Records.

This event is free but please book by emailing hps-whipple-museum@lists.cam.ac.uk.
