IT facilities in and around the Department
Whipple Library
The iMacs in the Whipple Library give access to the University online library catalogues, electronic resources and the Internet, and can be used for email.
Coffee Room
The students' coffee room, on the top floor of the Department, has several computers, a printer and a scanner.
Graduate IT Suite and the Mond Room
These facilities are provided by the Department for graduate students who have registered to use them. There is a small annual fee. Registration forms are available from the Department office.
Phoenix Room
Situated at the back of the Department, the Phoenix Room is operated by the University Computing Service as part of the Managed Cluster Service. It is open to all students. The room is equipped with facilities for printing (including colour printing) and scanning.
Wireless network access
The wireless network services Lapwing and Eduroam are available in the Whipple Library, Coffee Room, Graduate IT Suite and Phoenix Room. You will need a Raven password to start using Lapwing.
Computing advice
Backup, backup, backup – we can't say it often enough. Keep copies of all your precious documents on more than one CD, DVD, memory stick or other storage media, and keep them in more than one location. Remember to keep saving your work: working on a document and only saving it at the end of many hours of toil is not recommended!
Take precautions against viruses, but don't become obsessive about them. There are some nasty viruses out there, but there are also many timewasting hoaxes. See the Computing Service virus information page for information on how to avoid becoming infected, what to do if you are, and advice on hoaxes.
