Consulting closed access material

Reserve books

Books noted on the catalogue as 'RESERVE' are held behind the Library desk, each book marked on the spine with a red sticker. They are in great demand and cannot be borrowed until 4pm, though they can be used in the Library until then. They are due back at 10.30am the next day.

Reference only books

Books noted on the catalogue as 'REF ONLY' are marked with a 'For Reference Only' sticker. These books are restricted to in-Library use only, and may not be borrowed.

Loan/reserve folders

The Library holds copies of most articles on undergraduate reading lists, and records for these items are available on the online catalogue. Folders can be borrowed from the Library desk for use in the Library or for overnight loan. Loan folders may be borrowed from 12.30pm and are due back at 10.30am next day. Reserve folders may be borrowed from 4pm and are due back at 10.30 next day.

Special collections and rare books

All special collections and rare books are kept in secure storage and the catalogue will show 'STORE' after the classmark. To consult special collections items, please fill in a Store Request Slip, which can be found on the Library front desk. Books ordered by 2.00pm will usually be fetched by 2.30pm on the same day. Books requested after 2.00pm will be ready at 9.30am the following day. More frequent fetching during the day may be possible depending on staff availability. Special collections materials may be consulted only in the Library Office or on the designated rare books reading desks on Level One of the library.

Non-special collections store books

Due to space constraints in the library reading rooms some books are kept in secure storage and the catalogue will show 'STORE' after the classmark. If you need to consult any of these items, please fill in a Store Request Slip, as described above under 'Special collections and rare books'. Pre-1900 store books can only be consulted in the Library, either in the Library office or on the designated rare books desks on level one. Post-1900 Curator's Room books (classmark prefix CR) may not be borrowed.

Theses

The Library holds some, though not all, PhD and MPhil dissertations completed by students attached to the Department. A list of titles is kept behind the Library desk and is also available to download:

Theses and dissertations held in the Library office

Records for the PhD dissertations are also added to the online catalogue. The dissertations are located in the Librarian's Office and cannot be borrowed. Please ask at the desk if you wish to consult one.
