Admissions
Anyone with a genuine research interest may make use of the Whipple Library for reading purposes.
The following categories of user may automatically have borrowing rights:
- Anyone registered for an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in the University of Cambridge
- Any senior member of the University of Cambridge, and any College Fellow
- Staff, associate lecturers, affiliated lecturers, affiliated research scholars, visiting scholars and visiting students in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science
The following category of user may apply to the Librarian for borrowing rights, supported in writing by a senior member of the University:
- Visiting scholars and visiting students from other colleges and departments in the University
Borrowing rights will not normally be given to any person who falls outside these categories. In exceptional circumstances an application can be made, supported in writing by a senior member of the Department, for consideration by the Library Committee. A fee may be payable.
How to register as a borrower
Those entitled to borrow must complete a registration slip on their first visit. Please bring your University card and, in the case of Visiting Scholars, a letter of introduction.
Consulting special collections and rare books
- Requirements for visiting readers
Visiting readers should apply in writing or by email to the Librarian in advance indicating the materials they would like to consult. Upon arrival, visiting readers should supply a form of valid photo ID, showing both name and permanent address, as well as a letter of introduction from an academic institution. Booking in advance is essential. - Requirements for all readers
Library staff supervise the use of special collections materials in the Library. All readers are required to sign for these beforehand and consult them as directed by Library staff.
