Online exam questions: website pilot

19 May 2011

CARET have been working on an exploratory project to make past examination papers available online to students.

This is not yet a production service but is a work in progress. This pilot site is aimed at getting some content up quickly and provoking user reaction in the current exam period to find out how students would best like the information presented. The content is currently 2010 examinations only and there may be missing papers as this is based on the contents of the papers printed and bound for holding in College and University libraries under open access.

CARET would like students to react to it while actively thinking about exam preparation! Feedback should be sent to the email address (examspilot@caret.cam.ac.uk) which can be found at the bottom of the FAQ/Contact tab on the website.

Ebooks: downloading copies from the MyiLibrary platform

19 May 2011

The ebooks team has been advised that MyiLibrary have enabled limited downloading of ebooks from their platform to library users. Downloading will be possible to devices which read PDFs, e.g. Sony e-reader, Barnes & Noble Nook. Apps are available (e.g. Bluefire) for the iPhone and iPad (but note, not the Kindle). Users need to create a personal MyiLibrary account and to add Adobe Digital Editions to their device.

Two concurrent downloads will be permitted and the ebook will also remain accessible online as usual. Each download will last for a defined period (understood to be 14 days); readers can place holds and form a queue if both 'copies' are 'on loan'.

MyiLibrary are 'soft-launching' this feature and trialling it for the next 3 months. Further information will follow. In the meantime if you have any questions you can contact the ebooks@cambridge team at: ucam-lib-ebooks@lists.cam.ac.uk

Darwin’s library to be made available digitally

18 September 2009

Darwin's annotations on his copy of Lyell's 'Principles of Geology'

Annotations made by Darwin in his copy of Charles Lyell's Principles of Geology (5th edition, 1837), held at Cambridge University Library

Scholars around the world will soon be able to see Darwin's hand-written annotations on the books in his personal library.

Among the treasures of Cambridge University Library is Darwin's richly annotated library. Thanks to a JISC/NEH-funded collaborative project between the Library and high-profile partners including the Natural History Museum and the American Museum of Natural History, Darwin's marginalia – originally transcribed manually in the 1980s – will be 'digitally married' to the texts they annotate and made available to scholars within the international Biodiversity Heritage Library.

The project is supported by the JISC/NEH Transatlantic Digitization Collaboration grant program offered by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC), a joint committee of the UK further and higher education funding bodies.

17th and 18th century Burney Collection newspapers

10 February 2009

The Burney Collection of 17th and 18th century newspapers online is now available to staff and students of the University. This was made possible through an agreement negotiated by JISC Collections for all UK universities. The newspapers and news pamphlets gathered by the Reverend Charles Burney (1757–1817) represent the largest single collection of 17th and 18th century English news media. The 700 or so bound volumes of newspapers and news pamphlets were published mostly in London, however there are also some English provincial, Irish and Scottish papers, and a few examples from the American colonies, Europe and India.

A site has also been set up by the publisher, Gale Cengage, to facilitate cross-searching with the 19th Century British Library Newspapers under the heading 'British Newspapers 1600–1900' at http://infotrac.galegroup.com/itweb/cambuni?db=BNWS. The Burney Collection is also available on the Gale Cengage site which provides access to all of their titles, including 18th Century Collections Online, at http://infotrac.galegroup.com/itweb/cambuni.
