LibrarySearch
Searches all Cambridge book collections as well as journal articles and electronic resources. Includes 'My Discoveries', a tool for storing, tagging and sharing references.

Janus
Provides access to catalogues of a growing proportion of the archives held throughout Cambridge. The work is in progress, with new catalogues being added regularly. Please note: Whipple Library archives have not yet been loaded onto Janus.

CrossSearch
Enables Google-style searching of over 300 key resources simultaneously, including Philosopher's Index, Web of Science, Science Direct, major ejournal providers Eighteenth Century Collections Online and Early English Books Online. In the advanced CrossSearch interface, multiple subject areas or specific resources can be searched at once. CrossSearch is available direct to current students and staff within the Cambridge domain. Off campus access available via Raven.

Dissertations

The Whipple Library holds some, though not all, PhD and MPhil dissertations completed by students attached to the Department, as well as a few MPhil essays and Part II essays and dissertations (the University Library has a copy of all HPS PhD dissertations). Recent MPhil disserations (post-1996) are archived by the Departmental Office. A list of titles held by the Library is kept behind the desk and can also be downloaded. Records for the PhD dissertations are also available on the online catalogue. The dissertations are located in the Librarian's Office and cannot be borrowed. Please ask at the desk if you wish to consult one.

  • English Short Title Catalogue (ESTC)
    Lists over 460,000 items from the British Library and over 2,000 other libraries, published between 1473 and 1800 mainly in the British Isles and North America. Mainly English.
  • Incunabula Short Title Catalogue (ISTC)
    International database of 15th-century European printing created by the British Library with contributions from institutions worldwide.
  • MASC25
    Resource guide to printed special collections in libraries in Higher Education institutions within the London area.
  • Nineteenth-Century Short Title Catalogue (NSTC)
    1.2 million records for English language books drawn from eight copyright and research libraries.

  • EThOS
    Electronic Theses Online System indexes the majority of doctorial theses submitted at UK institutions of Higher Education (a high number of these are, or can be, made available online).
  • Proquest Digital dissertations (USA)
    Extensive database providing access to details of mainly American dissertations.

International union catalogues

  • The European Library
    Searches content of most European national libraries.
  • Karlsruhe Virtual Catalogue
    Allows simultaneous searching of major German, Austrian and Swiss libraries (including the German union catalogue of serials (Zeitschriftendatenbank)), as well as many other catalogues around the world (including the UK's Copac).
  • LibDex
    Index to 17,000 university, further education and public libraries worldwide.
  • National Library Catalogues Worldwide

    Access to a rich collection of reference sources of library catalogues and databases.
